What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index is a single number that relates your weight to your height. It was devised in the 1830s by the Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet, who was studying the characteristics of populations — not diagnosing individuals. That origin matters, and it explains both what BMI is good at and where it falls down.

The formula is deliberately simple:

For example, someone 1.75 m tall weighing 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.9. This calculator handles both unit systems — switch between them with the toggle, enter your figures, and it returns your BMI and the category it falls into.

BMI Categories

The standard adult categories used by the World Health Organization are:

BMICategory
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy weight
25.0 – 29.9Overweight
30.0 – 34.9Obesity class I
35.0 – 39.9Obesity class II
40.0 and aboveObesity class III

These boundaries are conventions drawn from population health data, not biological cliffs. Nothing meaningful changes about your body between a BMI of 24.9 and 25.1 — the category shifts, but you don't.

What BMI Is Good For

At the population level, BMI is genuinely useful. It's cheap, requires no equipment beyond scales and a tape measure, and it correlates well enough with body fat across large groups to be a practical screening tool. Public health bodies use it to track trends across millions of people, and clinicians use it as a quick first look that might prompt a more thorough assessment.

For an individual, it's best understood as a starting question rather than an answer. A BMI well outside the healthy range is a reasonable prompt to look further. A BMI inside it is reassuring but not proof of anything.

Where BMI Falls Down

BMI has one glaring limitation: it doesn't know what your weight is made of. Two people of identical height and weight have identical BMIs whether that weight is muscle, fat, or bone.

Better Questions Than "What's My BMI?"

If you want a fuller picture of your health, BMI is one input among several. Consider adding:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI different for men and women?

The formula and the standard adult categories are the same for both. Women typically carry a higher healthy body fat percentage than men at the same BMI, which is one more reason BMI alone gives an incomplete picture.

My BMI says overweight but I'm quite fit. Should I worry?

If you carry significant muscle, BMI will overstate your risk. A body fat estimate or a waist measurement will tell you far more. That said, it's worth checking rather than assuming — muscularity is a common explanation, but it isn't the only one.

How quickly can BMI change?

Your height is effectively fixed, so BMI moves with weight. For a person of average height, roughly 3 kg (about 6.5 lb) shifts BMI by about one point. Day-to-day weight fluctuates by a kilogram or more from hydration and food alone, so weigh yourself under consistent conditions and look at weekly averages rather than single readings.

Should I aim for a specific BMI?

Chasing a number is rarely the most useful goal. Habits — regular movement, adequate protein and fibre, decent sleep, strength training — improve health markers whether or not BMI moves much. If weight change is medically indicated for you, your doctor can set a target that accounts for your build, history and overall health.

Disclaimer: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and it does not measure body fat directly. It is not appropriate for children, pregnant people, or highly muscular individuals. This page is general information, not medical advice — consult a healthcare professional about your own health.
